Nov. Recap: SEAWI 2017 Fall Conference

The 2017 Fall Technical Conference was hosted ealier last month in Green Bay, WI, and included presentations on Structural Engineering Emergency Response (SEER) and the new Titletown District development. For anybody interested in being involved in SEER or finding out more about it, feel free to contact the committee chair, Bob Steckel (Bob.Steckel@ambeng.com).

Two new website features were introduced during the conference, the "Find an Engineer" and the "Careers" tabs.  You can check them out on the website!

There was also the presentation of the SEAWI Excellence in Wisconsin Engineering Awards, as well as a tour of the Titletown District construction and Lambeau Field. See the photos from this event here.

The 2017 SEA-WI Excellence in Structural Engineering Award winners:
Pierce Engineers, Acuity East Galleria - Sheboygan, WI

This project is one of a number of projects which approximately doubles the footprint of the existing Acuity insurance facility.  Besides the normal challenges that come with building new structure adjacent to existing structure, this project had many other unique challenges, such as accommodating a 65 foot diameter Ferris wheel, design of a two story circular auditorium within the building, and a monumental stair with no vertical support at the intermediate landings.

Acuity East Galleria

Spire Engineering, Sage on Prospect - Milwaukee, WI

This project is a renovation of a nursing home to a multi-family residential building. Although size and footprint of the building appear simple, there were many complex structural challenges such as the addition of two new stories with very limited information on the original drawings, the design of a new lateral system for the building, the addition of hung balconies, and with many other construction surprises.

Highland Manor Community Safe Room

Performa Architects+Engineers, Belmark Skywalk Connector Link - De Pere, WI

This project component is a part of the Plant 1 and Plant 3 expansions for Belmark.  One of the largest influences on the design of the skywalk was the site constraints, considering the skywalk is spanning over a roadway.  Along with that came the challenge of coordinating the design with the steel shipping requirements, designing for thermal expansion, camber of trusses, and the use of a box truss so to efficiently incorporate both a floor and a roof into the design.
