2011 Technical Conference

On June 2nd, we had over 40 people present for the first annual technical conference from SEA-WI. We had technical presentations from John Rolfes of Computerized Structural Design  on “30 rules for efficient steel design“, and Jack Gibbons of CRSI on “ACI 329 – Performance based concrete“.  John opened the afternoon conference by delivering a presentation full of practical knowledge that is essential for designing steel buildings and Jack closed the day with a presentation full of videos and out of the box ideas on concrete mixes that can solve the problems we face if complex reinforced concrete design projects. In-between these opening and closing acts we had project presentations from Brian Genduso and Matthew Mikolainis of HGA on their project “UW Education Building” and Eric Fink and Chad Wittinghill of Cogdel Spenser Erdman (Madison) on their project “Steel Medical Facility in the high seismic area of Paducah, KY“. Both presentations offered systematic approaches to challenging structural designs for buildings, and ideas for how we can solve similar challenges for projects completed in our own offices.

Following the presentations we had an entertaining dinner and SEA-WI board presentation, including a SEA-WI history lesson from Jason Gross, an Outstanding Contribution Award to David Boldt, and a Recognition Award to Richard Pierce for his help with starting SEA-WI in 2009.

Thank you to all of the attendees. We look forward to seeing all of you at one of the technical presentations or board of director meetings throughout the next year (calendar of events) and at next year’s technical conference.

Lastly, I want to thank the wonderful vendors we had at the event, who all had great information for their products and services, they included:
